Every UK gas bill follows the same basic formula. Once your meter readings have been converted into kilowatt-hours (kWh), the calculation is straightforward:
1. Usage Cost = KWh consumed x Unit Rate (6.24p/kWh)
2. Standing Charge = Daily charge (31.43p) x Number of days
3. Subtotal = Usage Cost + Standing Charge
4. VAT = Subtotal x 5%
5. Total Bill = Subtotal + VAT
Suppose you use 1,000 kWh in a month (approximately 30.44 days):
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the standard unit of energy used on UK gas bills. It represents the amount of energy released by burning enough gas to produce one kilowatt of power for one hour. All UK energy suppliers are required by Ofgem to bill domestic customers in kWh so that tariffs can be compared on a like-for-like basis.
Your gas meter actually measures volume — either in cubic metres (m³) for metric meters or hundreds of cubic feet for imperial meters. Your supplier converts this volume into kWh using the following steps:
The calorific value represents the energy content of the gas supplied to your area and is published by your gas transporter. It typically falls between 37.5 and 43.0 MJ/m³, with 39.5 MJ/m³ being the standard average used for estimates.
The Ofgem Energy Price Cap sets the maximum rate that energy suppliers can charge customers on default or standard variable tariffs. The cap is reviewed quarterly and applies to approximately 23 million UK households. Below are the current rates used in this gas bill calculator KWh tool:
| Rate Component | Current Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gas Unit Rate | 6.24p per kWh | Cost for each kilowatt-hour of gas used |
| Standing Charge | 31.43p per day | Fixed daily charge regardless of usage |
| VAT | 5% | Reduced rate for domestic energy |
| Typical Annual Bill | ~£873 | Based on 11,500 kWh average annual usage |
