Current Gas Rates (Q2 2026)
Ofgem's Q2 2026 price cap sets the maximum rates energy suppliers can charge:
- Unit rate: 5.74p per kWh (down from 5.93p in Q1 2026)
- Standing charge: 29.09p per day (down from 35.09p in Q1 2026)
- Effective period: 1 April - 30 June 2026
What Is a Gas Unit?
Gas consumption is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Your gas meter may show:
- Metric meters: Read directly in cubic metres (m³)
- Imperial meters: Read in cubic feet - need conversion
- Smart meters: Usually display kWh directly
How Your Gas Bill Is Calculated
- Usage cost: kWh consumed × 5.74p
- Standing charge: 29.09p × number of days
- Total: Usage cost + standing charge
- VAT: 5% added to the total
Typical Gas Usage
Ofgem's Typical Domestic Consumption Values (TDCV) for gas:
- Low usage: 8,000 kWh/year (small property, efficient heating)
- Medium usage: 11,500 kWh/year (typical household)
